Product Classification for Production Statistics, Edition 2002 (GP 2002)

The purpose of the GP 2002 is to show data on products produced in the areas of mining, quarrying, manufacturing, and energy and water supply.

Such information is needed, among others, by enterprises in order to analyse and assess sales markets and opportunities.

Also, the GP 2002 has been designed (as was the previous edition, the GP 95) in a way enabling it to be used to describe the Klassifikation der Wirtschaftszweige (WZ - Classification of Economic Activities). This means that the conceptual link between the GP and the WZ permits to provide information on what products are usually produced by what classes (5-digit headings) of the WZ.

The products produced include not only the goods (that can be transported) but also the so-called industrial services (assembly work, repairs, maintenance, treatment).

The GP 2002 is based on the PRODCOM list, which is a list of product categories for European production statistics. As far as required for national purposes, the eight-digit PRODCOM items have been further broken down in the GP 2002 (nine-digit items).
